hi, i'm shayne!
I'm a Chicago-based food writer, illustrator, and storyteller. You might've seen my writing and recipes in publications like Bon Appétit and TASTE.
I founded a quarterly print publication about the foodways of Asia, Dill Magazine, in 2017, which went on to gain international readership and a spot on The New York Times' 2018 "14 Food Titles You Need to Know."
These days, my focus is on writing my weekly Substack newsletter, That One Dish, on third-culture Asian home cooking, for 2300+ friends. I've also honed my art skills throughout the past couple years, and now operate as an independent food artist via Shayne Draws Food.
I got my degree in linguistics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2020 and now work as a data analyst for a major airline. If I’m not writing queries or growing my newsletter, I’m cooking and baking, tending to my indoor hydroponic garden, urban sketching, traveling, learning languages, or curating my collection of vintage cookbooks.
